Mahjong scoring notes
Instead of using the full scoring table with fu values, it’s generally easier to memorize a small set of scores and lean when to deviate from it. The main factors that determine your score are:
- Tsumo/Ron?
- Open/Closed?
- Chiitoitsu?
- Pinfu?
Standard scoring table is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/157ndF1adDwa8tPdOF2FsDrkvWW1wrqRL5jLky8y1xhU/edit?gid=0#gid=0
The quick summary
- 30-fu is the lower line of scores
- 1000, 2000, 3900, 7700, etc.
- 40-fu is the higher line of scores
- 1300, 2600, 5200, 8000, etc.
- Closed + not pinfu + ron is usually > 40fu
- Everything else is usually <30fu
- Pinfu+tsumo has 20fu
- Same as 40fu row, but 1 han less
- n/a, 1300, 2600, 5200
- Chiitoitsu has 25fu
- n/a, 1600, 3200, 6400
Notes to help remember
Chiitoitsu has a single set of scores (800s)
- 1 han doesn’t exist
- 2 han is always 1600/2400
- Ron gets that amount from a single person
- Tsumo doesn’t exist
- 3 han is always 3200/4800
- Ron gets that amount from a single person
- Tsumo gets 800/1600 per person
- 4 han is always 6400/9600 (not mangan)
- Ron gets that amount from a single person
- Tsumo gets 1600/3200 per person
Open + ron and Pinfu + ron are identical (1000s)
- 1 han is 1000/1500
- 2 han is 2000/2900 (not 3000)
- 3 han is 3900/5800 (not 4000/6000)
- 4 han is mangan
Pinfu + tsumo is unusual (4/7/13)
- 1 han doesn’t exist
- 2 han is total 1500 (400/700) or 2100 if dealer
- 3 han is total 2700 (700/1300) or 3900 if dealer
- 4 han is total 5200 (1300/2600) or 7800 if dealer
All other tsumo hands have the same score (3/5/10)
- 1 han is 300/500 (total 1100)
- 2 han is 500/1000 (total 2000)
- 3 han is 1000/2000 (total 4000)
- 4 han is mangan
Closed + ron is a little higher (1300/2000)
- 1 han is 1300/2000
- 2 han is 2600/3900 (not 4000)
- 3 han is 5200/7700 (not 8000 or 7800)
- 4 han is mangan
And then if you have enough fu, the scores rises some more!
